Monday & Tuesday
As you can see I am getting a little lazy with the blog. Dijon has been a bit of a relaxing stay and we decided not to go racing off around the country sight seeing etc.
Our taxi ride was very successful time and effort wise. The driver was very careful which was appreciated as we drove through some tiny roads, ancient little villages and torrential rain at times. We arrived in Dijon at about 11.30 am and found that our hotel was right slap bang in the middle of major works creating a tram line from the Gare (station) to the middle of the city. Every road in the vicinity has been dug up, barriers abound and road access is very difficult. Our driver helped us into the hotel and was in all ways extremely helpful so we felt we had our moneys worth. I cant imagine doing the trip by public transport with all the luggage Jan and Kevin had. They pick up their car tomorrow (Wednesday) so are happy to carry so excess.
Our hotel is good, clean and with all mod cons, but very old. Rooms quite small but perfectly adequate, although our bed has a serious ‘roll together’ factor. Paul says he was way more comfortable on our tiny bed in the boat.
We had one of the best meals to date last night at a Nouvelle Cuisine restaurant in town which far suited our tastes rather than the usual French fare. Early to bed and hoping for a good nights sleep.
Dijon is a very ancient city, with a lot of medieval buildings, grand churches, cathedrals and Palaces. Cobbled streets and half timbered houses. There are not too many tourists around, although we have encountered quite a few Asian bus tour groups. The first we have seen in France.
We agreed to meet at 9 am this morning and go and find breakfast. The French don’t eat breakfast as we know it. Rather just a black coffee and a croissant. We wanted something a little different and just about walked the town looking. We settled in the end for the black coffee and Paul and Kevin went down to the nearby boulangerie and bought – yes you guessed it, croissants and pastries which we proceeded to eat at the table with our coffee. Usual practice in these parts.
More just cruising around town taking in the sights and then lunch of course – more lovely salads. Back to the hotel for a rest and then Jan and I had a hair appointment at a nearby salon. Jan wanted to get her hair done so that it will be okay by the time they go to her nieces wedding in Italy in 4 weeks time and I was in need of a cut and colour. What an hilarious time we had. Neither of the girls in the salon could speak a word of English and our French was very limited. With a lot of gesturing and laughing we managed to get quite credible hair cuts, colours and blow waves. I am very satisfied with mine, although it is a little darker than usual!! All at a cost of 31E which is about $62 nz.
We are all having an early night tonight. Paul and I are off to Troyes in the morning on the train – the booking of the tickets was relatively easy, so lets hope the journey will be too. The station is just down the road, so hopefully all will be plain sailing. Certainly more easy than Jan & Kevin s trip which will entail negotiating the roadworks out of Dijon and onto the highway. Rather them than me!!!
More from Troyes tomorrow.
Thanks to our most devoted Blogee Claire for her many messages. It is good to hear from home.
