It has occurred to me that blogging about what we are doing now as opposed to what we were doing before is going to have to be very different. We're not stopping in a place to experience a bit of the culture and do a bit of sightseeing before moving on anymore. We've been here in one small village for 3 weeks now immersing ourselves in the culture, working with and around the local people. We're not in the depths of the Amazon jungle and we're not hanging out with African Savannah tribesmen but I believe this is a about as far removed from our modern culture as either of us have ever been. So while I don't want to sound like some Victorian explorer discovering new peoples, we certainly feel that we're exploring the frontiers of our own experiences.
For us this is a totally new and unexpected way of living. And it is also something that we feel could quite easily become our lives, with some careful thought and good planning. We've not just met the locals here, but also some other travellers. The kind of people we never met in hostels anywhere else that we've been. We are kind of off the beaten track (as I may have mentioned before). People do come here but they aren't your usual young hostel-going types. We've met a few seasoned travellers who have made this such a huge part of their lives and are so passionate that they love to talk, share their experiences and perhaps inspire others to emulate their experiences in some way. We've certainly been inspired. And we plan to continue our travelling to such an extent that we both now feel happy to sell off those last few precious items of our that we felt were crucial.
I took out a loan a while before we started travelling. I spent my entire life avoiding the need to have any debts to anybody. I always remained free in that sense and now I see that I took it for granted. Because now we have the true desire to be free and we can't be. I'll justify myself by saying that I expected to still be earning a good wage by this point, which is perfectly reasonable. But I'll sell the bike (I'll get my mum to do it anyway) and I'll even sell my beloved PC. That should see my debt reduced most of the way. And Katie will sell her Mini. We'll make all the necessary sacrifices to ease our travelling. Certain material luxuries can be put to the road-side for the time-being.
We are changing. The nomadic lifestyle is one that I'm now fully prepared to live. As for Katie, it seems she is really beginning to form ideas about her own ambitions in her mind. She had always been incredibly restless. It's been frustrating for me at times as I've only seen her desire to move and do something different all the time. I found something I was comfortable with and it made me happy to be secure. She's never been happy to be so static as that. My own problem with Kate's outlook is that you shouldn't be so flighty. You can't do something for a week or two then just get bored and drop it for the next thing. Especially not when it comes to earning some money to live. But I have always wanted to travel. So I went out on a limb with Kate's suggestions. You know, screw the job and the cosy life. Let's take the risk, let's drop everything.
It was the best thing I could ever have done. That we could have done. Kate has led me into this new life and she has been the catalyst for changing many things about the way my head is now working. I'm determined now to make travelling work for us for the rest of our lives. I have certain ideas about how to make that work which I will outline at some point. Katie is finding direction. She's beginning to find out what it is that she wants to be. She still wants to keep moving, but I think we're are coming to a middle point that's perfect for us both. And we have a longer-term goal too I think. Well, we have certain ideas for long-term goals at least. We got a lot of time ahead of us still.
Well that's what's going on in our heads (in a nut-shell so to speak!). The whole point of this blog was to say that this is going to change, drastically. I'm going to post updates as sections from now. We'll have a section on the people here, for example. And about how we're living and about what we're doing. And then I'll try to update each of those sections. To some extent, this ought to work in my off-exploring blog, but now I get to the biggest change.
The people we've met here have inspired me to work on what could pan out to be a proper website. A site primarily for keeping a log of what we're doing and where we are. But also a site that could hopefully inspire others the way we've been inspired. And perhaps I can find ways to earn some money from it. I'll work on it when I can and we'll see what can happen.
I'll try to find time to write stuff on this blog while I'm getting things up and running. I'll at least say a few things before we leave here for Egypt. Let me know what you all think and if anybody knows any way to help me out I'd appreciate any advice or whatever. That's enough crap for now though.
