Ok... so Naples is a bit of a dump! There's rubbish lying in the street everywhere. Apparently the rubbish collection is terrible! Since the mid-90's the camorra took over the garbage disposal in Campania with disasterous results for the health of the general population as there are no dumping sites and often it is burnt in the streets to avoid detection!
Went to see Herculaneum, one of the other cities destroyed by the Vesuvius eruption and much better preserved than Pompei and easier to see everything in half-a-day at least! My feet are sore from all the walking we've done so far and i'm probably going to have blisters by the end - oh dear! I had an authentic Neapolitan pizza baked in wood-fired oven after the trekking - delicious!!!
Another trip back to Naples on the wild train to see the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. It has everything under the sun from Greece, Rome, Pompei, and Herculaneum, including bodies from Pompeii, which I thought was slightly gruesome! Finally found some Roman medical and surgical instruments - pictures of which should be useful for the essay.
Deciding it was high time we headed back to the station, as it was getting dark and the mafia were getting restless! Haha! This was a bad idea, as some vagrant decided that it was be a nice idea to pick-pocket me. I was sitting bopping along to my iPod and reading my book when I felt his hand in my pocket, apparently going for my phone. Fortunately I gave his a piece of my mind before he could retrieve it and stormed off in search of Phil.
The train back to Rome was one of those that you see in James Bond films with their own little cabins, much to my delight. I was glad to get back to Rome last night - both Phil and I think it feels like home now. Only 7 weeks left now! x
