Early in the morning we all squeezed into the car, along with all our bags, to start the drive from Rockhampton down to Hervey Bay. We had already made the decision that we would make a day of it and stop off at a few places on the way.
Our first stop was a set of caves just to the north of Rockhampton. These were really cool. I would have loved to have gone round and explored on my own but we weren't allowed so we went on a guided tour instead. This lasted for about an hour and we got to see loads of ace parts of the cave and learned loads of stuff. Although the main thing I learned is that being 6'2' I'm not ideally suited to low caves! Other than the headache it was a good experience.
We were soon on the road again, this time actually heading south towards Hervey Bay. Our second stop was at a place called 1770. We had all heard great things about this town so figured we would go as we had to pass it. When we got there we descovered that the town of 1770 actually has nothing there! It's just a small collection of houses and a camp site that's it. Brilliant! We did manage to find a small empty beach which was cool (especially because we all need to stretch our legs) so it wasn't a total loss.
The rest of the drive we listened to the cricket (very depressing). However this kept being interupted by local storm warnings talking about dangerously strong winds, heavy rain and lightning. All of which we were driving directly into. It made things interesting anyway. Luckly for us by the time we got into the storm effected area it had started to calm down so we missed the worse of it. However Fraser Island got hit pretty badly and that's where I am going to be in a few days. Fingers crossed.
Didn't get to see much of Hervey Bay because it was dark when we got here but I'm only here a night so no big deal. Next stop is Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island, hopefully.
