Leaving Mendoza was really hard. I realised that I had been in the same hostel for 2.5 weeks. Made really good friends, and it was sad to leave. Went North with a friend from the hostel, Frederic, a French Canadian. We had a mission to get out into the country where no English was spoken, in order to meet the real Argentina. In one small town, a man told us that it was the first time his 7 year old son had seen a North American. I didn't tell him that I am English! Actually on that subject, I did meet a very drunk bloke of about 50 and I made the mistake of telling him that I was from England. Turns out he was a veteran on the Falklands War. Whoops. He got quite upset and was describing all kinds of horrors in drunken Spanish. I think they were a conscript army of really young men and got smashed to bits by our Paras and Royal Marines. Not nice. Anyway, on the most part, people who did bring up the subject were quite nice about it, with the exception of one or two. I just told them they shouldn't have invaded in the first place. Ha ha no kidding. Anyway, we camped out one night after a 4 hour hike into the semi desert from this little town. We had the Andes to the west of us, and as it got dark, you could see EVERY star in the sky, with the milky way spreading from horizon to horizon. Trouble is, the temperature dropped to below zero, and we didn't have a tent, and Frederic decided that he didn't need a sleeping bag, but would instead wear ALL his clothes. We didnt get any sleep at all. shivered all night. Funny! Another highlight of the trip was somehow getting invited to this teenage disco by these giggling 18 year old girls. I swear they were 18. they don't see many people with blue eyes and fair hair so me and Fred were rock stars for the night. All the kids were great, and we must have met everyone in the place. Really friendly people. Other highlights of the trip were the amazing steaks cooked on a barbeque. You have never never had a good steak until you have had an argentinian steak. Best in the world. Oh, and after 15 losses, I finally won a game of Chess. GET IN!!!!
