Hello everyone!! Hopefully this update will be successful - we haven't had much luck! Also, we've been discussing, and realised that this will probably be a rather boring blog as it's WAY more interesting to read about pickpockets and camels than sunsets and cocktails! Still, we'll power on - for your sake only of course!
When we last wrote we were in Colva, which is in Southern Goa. The highlight of Colva was ... "Karaoke with Oskar" ! It was a Tuesday night special with Oscar our host. He may have looked Indian, but he sang like Elvis (so he thought!)! Need we say more?! At first we thought he was a top-rated superstar (as I'm sure you do too) however, by the end we just couldn't stand him - he 'harmonised' over everyone else's songs - the limelight could never belong to anyone else! Although I was tempted to join Oskar on the big stage, James couldn't be convinced. So we just enjoyed watching.
From Colva we went south to Benaulim for a night, and then south again to Palolem - our favourite place in Goa so far. After a couple of nights in Palolem, we headed to North Goa, starting in Baga (party beach), and today arriving in Vagator. We'll stay here a couple of nights, then head back to central Goa for a couple of nights before catching our train to (dreaded) Mumbai for our flight to Vietnam.
Generally, we're loving the food in Goa as it's all so fresh. We've been having fresh fish from the sea almost everyday and have built up quite a taste for the old seafood. Something that can only bode well for our future travels. Our best days have been spent getting up early for a morning swim in the sea. Followed by a breakfast of fresh fruit juice and lemon pancakes. Relax in the shade in the afternoon - reading, writing, chatting and playing games. Finally, a lovely dinner at night. Simple as that really!
We had great fun 'riding the waves' in Palolem one day. I use the quotation marks because I (Rois) of course couldn't do it! James was fairly pro at waiting for the wave, swimming, floating atop the wave and arriving ashore with the smile of success. I, on the other hand, would either be taken by surprise by the size and pace of the wave, and therefore get dunked. Or, would try my best to copy James, make it about two strokes forward ... and get dunked - but this time with more gusto than when I just didn't try! I've got a good scrape on my knee from where I was washed ashore, and James had to pick me up saying, 'Quick Rois, here comes another one"! But I had fun trying and we bonded with three other guys doing the same thing by exchanging 'tips'!
Also in Palolem, we caught the end of a 'DJ set' by an ex-UB40 member on the beach. To say it was bad would be an understatement. It consisted of the man himself sillouetted on a multi-coloured 'stage' with a dancing girl, and a laptop. And it was over by 10pm!
Some other highlights have been a Hindi Musical being blasted from a loud speaker across the road from our hotel ... the play started at midnight! And a major highlight for us was having a TV in our room in Baga (our first TV since Delhi!) ... we enjoyed watching BBC World and Jumanji on repeat!
Oh, and for those of you who know about (and go on about!) my inability to eat a lot at once (Katy ... Ashcherrelle ... Mum and Dad!) you'll be glad to know that I didn't finish my dinner the other night, and the chef came out to tell me that "A Goan child would have finished that meal" !
On that note, we shall sign off again! Next time we blog we shall be in Vietnam! Love to you all, xxxxx
