Our Journey to Thailand from Penang at 5am on a ramned mini bus packed in like sardines for 12hrs!! We tried to find a cheap hostel in Krabi for ages in the blazing heat. Asked a stranger and he points out that we are just next to those. Found a cheap hotel high up on 5th floor...kept us fit...AND no mossies!!!!! Boat races and festival going in on in the town as they were celebrating their new year (2550). They celebrate for a whole week!!
We hired a motor bike to discover Krabi landscape lots of rocks and mini Islands in the sea. The beaches and towns are very touristy! We minced around for ages and got caught in the biggest night storm EVER on our motor bike. Could only drive at 15 km/hr .... Couldnt see anything...Very dodgy especially with the lightning every few seconds! We didnt leave when the sky was clear as we stopped to check out a lot of local festival stalls. One stall was selling fried insects...some as big as our hands! Mum...you would have LOVED IT!! I nearly ate some beleiving everyone here eats them but James was having none of it! Next day, we met a local, our kayak guide who told us noone with any brain does eat them!!! We went for lovely tasty food that evening by the sea front that was only 10p per dish...No meat though ;-)
Next day, we got up early to go Kayaking in the swamps. On the way there, James had to do an emergency stop to go to the toilets due to upset tummy (we usually have one after the other!!) came back out of the toilets socking wet!! Most toilets in Asia do not have a flash and no paper, they have a squirting hose to clean themself but silly James managed to point it the wrong way round to squirt it on his face!!!!!!Â
Lucky for us that day... it was the new years day...No one around! It was only us 2 and our guide, Lho. Amazing scenary: Rocks and cliffs everywhere you looked, swamp trees with roots growing out of water, monkeys following us along the swamps hanging of the trees...On those trees roots which sticks out of the water, grows mini Oysters which are eatable...And me being french....Ate lots of them! They were YAMMY! James yet again....not too impressed and did not try them! Went to a swamp where James Bond was filmed! Bit scary though because at night time there, anaconda and cobras all sorts come to the water to feed!! Bit scary!
We only paid for half a day trip but our guide loved being out there so much with noone around that he extended our trip to a full day! Which was lovely UNTIL.......The walk of DEATH! As the tide was going down quickly, there was only one way to go across to another swamp and that was in the mud! About 500 meters to cross! I was having none of it...could not physically do it. We had mission paddling over falling trees and as the water dries out, poor James got out of the kayak, sludgy mud up to his knees, tried to drag the kayak with me in it but was impossible. So I jumped onto his back and immediately sank up to his waist!!! Had to walk it! It was HORRIBLE! Our guide was in hysterics laughing at the way I was screaming! "that was NOT in the brochure!!" Finally made it.....last stop was a tinny island covered in crabs....AMAZING TRIP after all that....great adventure!
Had many beers with our guide who told us about his many wives around the world. As we were driving back to our hotel, everyone in the streets where chucking water and flour at everyone one (Thai tradition on new years day),even from cars, at driving cars pedestrians etc....which was great as we were covered in mud! Good fun!
Next day wasn't as fun though! Stupidly managed to lose 20000 baht as we get our washing done and forget we hidden our money in the bag! Realised to late as the shop was closed! We were devasted to think we were so silly! Had lots of plots running through our head of what was going to happen the next day! James and I went back for thing the next day, He calmely asked the lady about the money and she had it safely kept it for us IF we came back to get it! Minus 5000 baht...Better then all gone! We have learnt a big lesson!
After that, nothing much interesting! Went to Koh Lanta off the coast of Krabi and to Koh Phi Phi! SO DESAPOINTING! It's like a mini over priced Ibiza!! All the pictures of the Island are exactly the same before the Tsunami. You cant tell there was a tsunami, just all filled with huts bars and cluns now! the water is not crystal clear like in the photos as all the coral must have been wiped out..Stayed one day!!!!! and decided that side of Thailand was not that great! Made our way to the east side to Kho Tao on a night boat packed like sadines again, 1 metre along the body. Since, we have been chiling on the this beautiful Island. Deciding where to go next. Probably Chain Mai, very north of Thailand! Finally Chloe and Katy have booked their tickets to Thailand....Can't wait :-)
Til next time....Adios....
