James and Ellie in Europe
Day 20:
We had coffee with Marian this morning, who, despite being on his vacation officially, was back at work again as usual!! He showed us to a good cafe so we could eat lunch and pointed us in the direction of the sights of the city.
We had pizza as any other veggie option consisted of salad or salad basically!!!
We walked up the steep cobbled streets and came across thousands of people who were all here for the medieval festival of Sighisoara!!! We were thrillled and set about exploring the hundreds of stalls selling everything from jewellery to masks to arts and crafts.
We saw the little house where Vlad Tepes himself (Dracula to the rest of you of course hehe) had lived for four or so years and then headed further up the hill.
We climbed the 200 or so (17th Century) steps to the top of the hill and saw a lovely little church and a spectacular view across central Romania but time was short and we had to return quickly.
When we had arrived here the day before we had seen hundreds of Iron Maiden t-shirts and were convinced that there was a metal festival going on: but this was definitely a good second-best!!!
We said our goodbyes to Marian - who is a true inspiration - and made our way to the station.
On Romanian trains the local sellers leave stuff in your compartment and then come back half an hour or so later to see if you've taken anything. On this particular occasion we were left with the usual keyrings, wallets, tat etc but were fortunate enough to be left with a fluffy keyring dog that sung 'Barbie Girl' whenever pressed on the tummy. Needless to say James thought it hilarious and spent several minutes annoying his fellow passengers by squeezing said tummy :o)
we were sad when it was collected but were strong enough to say goodbye!
Ellie slept for a lot of the journey, having been lacking severly in 'good night's sleep' whilst James made notes for the online travel journal which, by now, was days behind!!!
We arrived in Brasov (vampire country) and made it easily to our hostel via bus. This hostel gives you a free drink for every night you spend there so we collected our tokens gladly before hitting the town.
There was a real sense of community at the hostel and there was also the cutest lil stray kitten ever!!! We adopted him and named him Vlad hehe. He was soooooo cute!!
Everywhere we went we found english people and had dinner in an Irish pub (vegetarian pizza AGAIN!!!) before heading home. We had a long day ahead of us tomorrow with three castles to see (during an organised day-trip) so bed was a relief when it came
