Typhoon! So far, so good. We seemed to have been on a plane when the typhoon hit Central Vietnam! We left Hanoi-all fine, flew to Hue and whilst we were in the air there was turbulence (not bad though) apparently due to the typhoon. We landed in Hue and were greeted with rain, then as we tried to get to the centre, our taxi had to stop due to the flooding on the roads. We waited for a more water tight vehicle then arrived in Hue. Again, we seemed to have missed the worst of the storm. The result of which had left trees falling into roads, homes completely flooded and the Perfume River (river flowing through central Hue) burst its banks. It continued to rain off and on all day so we caught up on sleep and waited for the weather to clear whilst sitting in DMZ Bar (look it up-real backpacker haunt, yes we wrote on the wall too)! The next day was lovely bright sunshine. The Vietnamese have been very organised, working through the night to clear the roads. They have handled this so much better than we would ever have done-it is a credit to their stern spirit. We then travelled on a bus to Hoi An. The scenery on the bus tour was fantastic. We dont want to leave Vietnam! Arived in Hoi An yesterday and Im currently writing this, whilst the sun is shining outside. However, luckily for us we seem to have missed the rain again! Hoi An was flooded with at least 2 metres of water-all hotels are still cleaning away the debris (allthough, we really cant see any remnants of the floods). Again, Vietnamese extremely organised with their flood defenses. So, we were looking to go to Nah Trang which is a coastal town further south but rain has been forecast so we will let you know of our next plans as and when we decide! Dont worry about us, we are perfectly safe and so far have not been touched by the typhoon. XXX
