I'm a little bit behind on my blog.
I left Malaysia two days ago, but oh, what a time. It can best be described as the The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
The good: Kuala Lumpur, a thriving metropolis and capitol city of Malaysia, where I meet this beautiful British girl, Sophie, on my first full day there. I decide to go to the Batu Caves, and while looking for the bus stop, I see her 20 feet away, looking as confused as I was as there was no sign indicating where the bus picked up from. I approached her and asked if she was looking for the bus to Batu Caves, and she confirmed that she was. As luck would have it, she's staying at the same hostel as me.
We begin talking as we wait for the bus, and as the bus takes us to the Batu Caves, and realize she's only in town for the day, and has an early morning train out the next day. After visiting Batu Caves, we do lunch, and we learn more about each other, and once I discover that she's in love with "How I Met Your Mother", I was hooked. We laughed, and we headed back to the hostel. She wanted to check out some other sights I had seen the day before, and I wanted to give her some time to herself, so I told her I was going to chill for a little bit. She insisted we have dinner that night, and I of course agreed. That's when she leaned in and kissed me.
For the next couple hours, as I relaxed at the hostel, I couldn't help but think of where to take her for dinner (not knowing the town at all), and where to go if something happens (sex at a hostel is downright complicated). We go out to dinner in Chinatown, my roasted duck was horrible, but had an awesome time with Sophie. We kiss a little more, and walk slowly back to the hostel. Back at the hostel, we go into the Theater room, a small room set up with some large cushions for 8-10 people to enjoy movies, and lay down and begin making out. Ten minutes in, and a little bit of clothes off, two Japanese guys come in, turns on the lights, and catches a glimpse of us, both topless.
The Japanese guys leave, and we put our shirts back on, and make our way out of the room. I suggest a hotel, and she says she shouldn't, that she was not ready for sex, but doesn't really explain why. Good British girl, I guess. Too bad she wasn't an American.
THE BAD -- The disgustingly dirty city, Kuala Lumpur. The smells in certain parts of the town, the result of months-old garbage, rotting in the streets without any efforts to clean up, combined with the stench from the homeless Malaysians who appeared to be setting world records for longest time without a bath or shower. I can't even describe their feet -- the thought of those putrid, hideous-looking feet brings about gagging and dry-heaves.
AND THE UGLY - in Penang, a fellow American, Sarah (Tian Huang), has her backpack stolen, which contained her passport, wallet, laptop, and about $500 cash. She had made the mistake of putting it on her shoulder closest to the street, and two guys on motorcycle came from behind and snatched the bag. The guys got away, and she needed to get to Kuala Lumpur to get to the embassy and get a new passport, and get home. She asked several people at the hostel, but nobody would help her. I stepped up, and only after verifying facts and obtaining a copy of the police report, and talking to the hostel manager who had gone with her to the police, did I agree to give her the money. Her friend first paypalled me $1000 and once received, I was to give her $1000 in return. Problem is -- she had to leave that night, and I could only access $500 from the ATM. I had an extra $150 in my wallet that I could give her, but that was it.
Everyone thought I was being scammed, but I trusted her and believed that everything was okay. In the end, I got my money from paypal to my checking account, and everything worked out in the end.
There's so much more to talk about, from the food in Penang, the awesome people I met in Kuala Lumpur hostel, but I will have to do another blog another day. It's 4am, and I'm done. I need to keep this blog up more often. I'm falling way behind, and more crazy stories have occurred since then.
