So I woke up this morning at 4am and was feeling pretty lonely but after a skype session with my sis and brother I was feeling much better so time to get on with the day. First I organized everything I'm going to need for training and asked security where I can get my bus tomorrow morning (at 6:30am!) then I called one of the Canadian girls but she was still adjusting to the time zone change and wasn't up until around 2pm so I did what I always do when I'm bored- watched tv online, looks like I haven't missed much since I've been away.
The plan was to go to some beach pretty far away with Pamyna and one of her friends but at about 4pm Pamyna called and said that her friend was MIA and since no one has cell phones yet there wasn't much we could do so Pamyna stayed by her landline phone and I decided to go shopping. I know, I know sounds crazy for me to want to shop but what I've realized is that living somewhere is very different than travelling somewhere. Turns out my priorities are food (found that yesterday), an iron, a hairdryer, a laundry bin (even though our washer is broken) and a cell phone or mobile as I was told later. Since I haven't seen my flatmate since I first met her yesterday I decided to track down the only person I know- Becca from Britain who is quickly becoming my absolute favourite person. I showed up at her door and she invited me in for tea! Then her and her friend proceeded to fill me in on all the shops I should visit and recommended a department store that would carry everything I needed, mind you they called it the supermarket and I keep asking are you sure it's not just for food but they insisted it's not a department store because it's only one floor.
Anyway I decided to cab it there as I was not feeling particularly daring to try the metro on my own and after hailing my first ever taxi I was on my way to The Mall of The Emirates. Just for the record every tourist thing I have seen so far has been by accident but lots of time to explore them later- for now essentials must be found, I was on a mission- which I failed it turns out. I got the iron, the hairdryer and the laundry basket but no cell phone- why you ask? Because apparently you need ID to get a pay as you go phone- guess who didn't bring ID with them? Yup, me. So cell phone will be tommorrow's project (hopefully).
On my way to the mall I saw the Burj Al Alam Tower (where Roger Federer played tennis on the helicopter pad) and the Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world. Interesting note- nothing has proper addresses here, you just tell people which building on which street, no street numbers or postal codes. Once I got in the mall I saw Ski Dubai, overall a good day, feeling better about living downtown in a city now that I'm actually doing it and to be honest I think I kind of like it. It helps that I can't hear the traffic from my room. Oh and one more thing- turns out if I walk about 20 minutes in either direction on my street I will hit a Timmy's!
