Hi everyone, we had a 6 hour journey from Cambodia to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) When we got to the border, some men with masks got on the bus and were putting thermometers in our ears and under our armpits! It was funny as they didn't seem to be doing it to anyone else except us two, we were getting laughed at by the locals! The first day we wandered around town, as you can see from the photos it's very manic. We noticed that the people here weren't as friendly as Cambodia and would struggle to smile! That night we decided to have a girly night, (evidence from photos!) And we made a new best friend, Celia! Unfortunately we had to leave her behind as she didn't get her visa in time! Silly girl! The next day whilst we were having breakfast we met a guy called Colm from Ireland. He's been travelling for 20 years so it was cool speaking to him and listening to all his stories. That day we decided to go to the cinema! We only had one night in HCMC, so didn't really have enough time to explore it as much as we would of liked. That evening we went for a meal with Colm and he tried to teach us how to use chopsticks, we kind of failed! But we did manage to try the local beer, Saigon!
The next day we left for Hanoi, the journey was 2 days and 2 nights so our time in Vietnam seemed very short. The drive was all along the coast. We stopped along the way at all the different places where you were supposed to stop but we had no time to do this! It looked beautiful and we were gutted we couldn't get off like the rest of the people! 2 days later we arrived in Hanoi. The streets were even crazier than Ho Chi Minh. The book said it was full of westerners but we didn't see any for ages. We stayed down a little back alley and to be fair at a first glance it was quite scary. The traffic never seems to stop here and you dont get a gap in the road so if we wanted to cross you just had to walk and hope for the best! We ended up being quite clever at it after all the practice! We found a little internet cafe and whilst we were in there a Vietnamese dwarf came in and asked if we'd help with writing an email in English. We helped a bit but then couldn't work out what he was asking of us so then he got angry and was swearing and shouting! He said he was sorry but he had to complain about us two! haha! We laughed in his face! Then he apologized as he wanted more help, stupid little man! Whilst we were walking around by the riverside, four police trucks pulled up outside a shop, they were using megaphones but obviously we didn't know what they were saying. They raided a shop..it was quite scary! We sat watching with our ice creams! Yummy! When we were sat around the riverside, people always seemed to be fascinated by us as they'd ask for photos. One guy even video recorded us! We went to a water puppet show that evening which was quite funny even though the story was being told in Vietnamese! We had a nice meal over looking the lake then we decided to walk back. All of the roads interlink and look the same so finding our place proved quite difficult! We ended up walking around for an hour quite late at night, we kept asking everyone for directions but they were just sending us the same way we had come from! We eventually found it and had a nice nights sleep! The next day we were getting our coach to Vientiane (Laos) at 5.30pm so had the day spare. We went for some lunch then realised we thought it would be quite funny to get drunk in the afternoon in the middle of Hanoi.. so we did! Then we had to get the coach feeling a bit sick, it wasn't the best of our ideas!
Overall, of what we saw on the coach, Vietnam looked beautiful and the two cities that we stayed in were very hectic. We were gutted we couldn't go to some of the places, especially Nha Trang and Halong Bay as it looked amazing. We are just running out of time before our flight to Sydney! But were glad we got to experience Vietnam, if only it was a little bit!
