I have so much to say... i don't know where to start - first of all this "internet cafe" is a shipping container with computers in it and this key board looks like someone has poo-ed on it!!! the hygiene here is what is going to test me the most! the gutters are open so the streets smell like sewage - its foul! the beaches are covered in rubbish and raw sewage and dead animals which mortified me! apart from all that, they are beautiful! there is no rubbish collection system here either. There are rubbish piles in people yards and they burn them off every now and then. You never see bins anyway, so people throw all of there trash on the ground as they go! This is so foreign to me!
Getting used to people yelling Obroni (foreigner) at me constantly. People just walk past and touch my skin and grab me - yes its white folks! the kids love it especailly! they run at us and grab us squealing - i think we are walking freak shows to them, but at the same time we show them attenation and interest which it doesn't appear that their parents do. The only time you'll see a mother with their child, is when it is strapped to there backs - apart from that, they are on their own! If you can walk, your independent! At the orphanage yesterday our 18 month old baby wet himself while sitting in a volunteers lap and it went all over her - the "aunty" started yelling in Fante and waving her arms around at this toddler till he was crying hysterically! i was so shocked, but then i thought about it and realised there are no nappies here, they are toilet trained as soon as possible..... So different to our lives. Some of the younger volunteers in my house are really struggling here. They can't get their heads round how these people function, and i understand where they are coming from, but you just have to accept it. Our job is to try and make a difference and hopefully they will learn from us. If you don't run with this mind set it will destroy you.
Anyway, i'm really enjoying it! i think i'll be able to really help my orphans with English. They love practising reading with me! Keeping this short and sweet today - Need some Aquim! think i might catch something from this computer!
