Day 3: We were all up really early for some reason so we decided to head over to Starbucks after breakfast for a drink. We got to the brand new Starbucks in Kuta, just down from the hotel, only to discover that their air conditioning wasn't installed yet and it was scorching hot in there! Leanne and Layla got a drink while I sweated outside. We made our way back to the hotel to meet our driver to take us off to the Bali Elephant Experience. We arrived after a 1.5 hour drive through twisty, busy streets to an oasis amongst the rice paddies. We immediately met our elephants: Layla was on Helen, Leanne was on Bella and I was on Eppie. We set off on our journey through the jungle on our elephants where we learned about their habits, what they eat, how they train them, etc. We got splashed in the pond and were finally dropped off so we could feed them some fruit and have some photos taken. This was definitely an experience to remember!
After the elephants we came back to Kuta, stopped quickly at the Hard Rock Cafe and then made our way back to the hotel to hit the pool...it was so hot! We spent the evening enjoying happy hour with some Aussies we had met and called it quits early.
Day 4: We were up at 7:00 and ready to go at 8:15 to experience some Balinese culture. Our first stop was at a music/stage show outlining the myth of the Barung or the good spirit. It was definitely entertaining! After that it was off to a silver store to see how they make jewellery from silver from Java, Bali and Sumatra. This was essentially a tourist trap, but the girls got some lovely silver! After the silver we headed off to a wood carving demonstration which was interesting, but the shop proved to be very expensive, so we didn't purchase anything. We had lunch among the rice paddies and then made our way to the monkey forest in Ubud. It was a very beautiful place full of macaques ready to eat bananas that you can buy and feed to them. We bought $5 worth of bananas and were overcome with monkeys...it was very cool. We walked around the grounds and saw the monkeys going about their business before deciding to purchase more bananas on the way out...this was a mistake. I was covered in monkeys and when one saw that I had no food, bit me on the head and the finger as I swatted him off. All I could think of was Outbreak! After Leanne was almost assaulted by a monkey we decided we had enough of that and made our way to our final destination which was the temple at Tanah Lot. It was crawling with tourists but beautiful nonetheless. We had a great two days and are really looking forward to our tour of Turtle Island tomorrow!
