Though I wasn`t that impressed with Panama city, San Jose now takes its place as being the worst capital city I`ve visited so far. It started badly when the taxi driver refused to take me to my prefered choice of hostel, assuring me it was booked up due to the final of Costa Rica`s football cup was being played that day. Strange, I thought, that they would choose to play a final on a Wednesday. We arrived at his recomendation of a hostel, which was expensive, empty and noisy due to construction being undertaken. With that, I went straight to my original choice to be greeted by vacancies and also a large notice telling me about how taxi drivers will take you to different hostels in the hope of making a comission from the hostel.
The hostel was by far the best thing about San Jose and its bar came in very handy when we realised there was no nightlife, even on a wednesday, in town. The next day, I went into town with Joe a friend I had met a few times on my travels, on his last day before going home (Duncan had decided to go on a day trip to the Jungle and was to meet my that evening). After finding nothing besides the artisan market, we retruned to the hostel to once again take advantage of the bar, this time at a far earlier hour. Eventualy Duncan returned safely and in one piece, not a victim of the caimans as I had feared, but by then it was time to crash and prepare for an early departure to Nicaragua the next day.
