We headed off to Montalcino. A village with a population of 5,099. It is home to a 14 Century fortress (Rocca) so I will be using up my allocated castle ration as set by Kirsten :) The fort was built in 1361 when the town was ruled by Siena. For their loyalty to Siena Montalcino gets to lead the parade as part of the Il Palio. The annual race that is held on 2 July in Siena. Given horses are not my favourite thing we gave the Il Palio a miss whilst we are staying in the region.
Montalcino is now famous for the dark red wine Brunello. There are sophisticated set ups in the town for wine tasting. However we have been spoilt by good Aussie reds and didn't enjoy the Brunello as much as it had been talked up.
Kirsten was starting to feel sick (unrelated to wine) so we headed back to Montepulciano.
