Cordoba is a really unattractive city with very little to do or see. It is a party town but only if you are hear at a weekend - we weren't. We even did a city bus tour to see what we were missing. Absolutely nothing! In fact if the bus had stopped we were intending to get off half way through and walk home. The most exciting thing about the tour was the stray dog we picked up along the way and then continued to trot beside the bus for a whole hour. As it dodged on coming traffic and people, we were amazed at it's loyalty to this tourist bus.
The hostel we stayed at here - Baluch - was however lovely. The breakfasts were out of this world - endless pastries and good coffee. Had a nice chill out area and a TV room with a DVD library. I took this opportunity to chill out and watch quite a few movies. We also cooked our own meals here which meant not only did we save money but we ate quite healthily which definitely makes a change. Though I did discover in the local supermarket Alfajores. These are an Argentinian speciality. It is half cake half biscuit. I am not a chocolate lover but these biscuits are amazing. They truly melt in your mouth - I am unfortunately addicted to these yummy creations.
Given there was not much to do in the city, we decided to have a day trip to a bordering town - Alta Gracias. This is where Che Guevara spent some of his youth and they have a museum there in his childhood home. WE took the bus, found the tourist information centre and obtained a map and set off to find the house. It is a lovely looking house in a really quiet residential street. Unfortunately for us the house was closed starting today for 3 days. I could not believe it. We had no choice but to take some photos and move on. We walked through the town to a viewpoint which actually had a replica of the grotto at Lourdes in France. I don't know why. It was interesting though. There were lots of plaques attached to the wall thanking our Lady of Lourdes for the miracles she had granted. After that we had exhausted the attractions of Alta Gracias and we headed back to Cordoba. We had quite some time to kill before our night bus, so we cooked and watched a movie. Despite having had all this time we still managed to run out of time. We ended up at the bus station, which is huge, with minutes until our bus was leaving and no idea which of the many platforms we should be at. I saw this guy who looked quite official. He turns out to be the Conductor if the Platform or at least that is the exact interpretation. He sounded like a character from Thomas the Tank Engine. He turned out to be very knowledgeable and escorted us to our bus. I was just so relieved when our bags were stowed away and I was safely sat in my seat. I am a worry merchant. Next stop ….....
