I was woken by the sound of an Indian man sharing the same compartment on the train. He was attempting to meditate, which done nothing but piss me off. It was a good alarm though as we were only an hour from getting to Varanasi. I jumped into a tuk tuk and was taken and walked to my hostel as it was down a load of windy streets, like everything is in the old city. I settled in and took in the amazing view of the Ganges from the roof top. I met this little lad who offered to show me around. I first went and saw the burning bodies which was amazing. The smell and smoke and the amount of people was ridiculous! It makes no sense to me though. As they think this river is so holy that it is an honour to be cremated right next to it and to have there body washed with the water. But you've got people pissing and s***ting in it, along with just dumping there rubbish in it. We then went to a couple of temples and again got an amazing view of the Ganges with all of the boats. The lad then took me to his boat where we travelled about a mile down river to watch a festival that happens every night at 6 pm. It involves a lot of music and dancing. It was quite nice watching it from the river with loads of other boats. After it had finished we headed back up river to a restaurant near my hotel. This was a roof top restaurant which seems to be the only places you can eat in Northern India. I had a chicken korma which came out with apples and bananas in. I couldn't believe it I thought I ordered the wrong dish but it was bloody tasty. I was gasping for a beer but being a religious city it was hard to come by so I went without. I then headed back to the hostel and gave the kid a little bit of money for showing my around, and headed to bed on the wifi for a few hours.
