So having been in Wellington for a week waiting for our passports to come back (we have our india visa's now, woohoooooo!) we eventually made it to the South Island on Monday! We were going to go on Sunday but the ferry wasn't running even thought they said that it would be! We got the ferry on Monday at 8am, and arrived in Picton at 11am. We drove straight to Nelson and stayed in the coolest hostel ever! They did free hot chocolate cake and ice cream every night at 8pm, and then did a free breakfast the next day!
the next day we drove to Nelson Lakes National Park which was lovely. We had some lunch there and then drove on to Westport (which was a dump!) and then to Punakaiki. The hostel there was brilliant too, and right on the beach although you wouldn't want to go into the water, it is really stormy and rough! We left there that morning and went to look at the pancake rocks - so called because they look like a pile of pancakes! It was raining really hard and we got soaked through! After that we went to Greymouth where we went to the Montieths Brewery. We had a tour around the working brewery and then got to taste 8 beers! We only had a little taste (not 8 pints) because we had to drive down to Hokitika after that. Some of the beers were nice, some disgusting! We got to pour our own beers at the end, which Jack was pleased about - he poured his first ever beer!
Last night we spent the night in Hokitika which is a nice little town, and today we are heading for Franz Josef to do the Glacier walk tomorrow. On the way there there is a bushman's cafe which serves up possum pie... i hope it's better than the ostrich burger, i'll keep you posted!
Hope everyone is well
