We spent a couple of nights in Auckland with Helen and James, had a few (ok, a lot!) of drinks over the weekend. On the Sunday we visited Waihiki Island just off the coast of Auckland. On Monday we got up early to get to the airport for our flight(s) to Bali. The first flight was Auckland to Sydney, which took about 3 hours. We only had one hour to transfer to the next flight, it was a bit short on time, but they got us a bus to the next flight and while we were going from one terminal to the next the airbus 380 went past us on the runway!! It is absolutely massive, especially when you are looking up at it from a little bus on the ground!
The flight from Sydney to Bali was pretty grueling. They had downsized the plane because the other one was in maintenance, and this one wasn't big enough to go the whole way and needed to stop for fuel in Darwin. It was 4 and a half hours to Darwin, one hour on the ground while they re-fueled and then another 2 hours to Bali. We got to the airport about 11.30pm (actually feeling like 3.30am NZ time) and got our visas.
We got a taxi from the airport. It said it was only a 25 minute walk from the airport to the town, but we were so tired we gave in and got a taxi. We didn't book any accommodation so spent about half an hour walking around looking for somewhere to stay. We finally found a place that was a little bit more expensive than what we have budgeted for, but all we needed was a bed! We were feeling hungry too so we went out and got some food and a Bintang (Indonesian Beer) which is delicious!
We went to bed after that, with the fan on full power. It's hot here, but not totally unbearable and i think we'll get used to it easily. The next day we walked around the town and had a look at the beach. The beach is ok, really crowded though, and nice surf. The beach is lined with surfboards for hire! The town is a little crazy, it's overcrowded with mopeds (as any asian city!) and lots of little shops and people screaming 'taxi taxi!!!' at you everytime you walk past a taxi!
It's nice enough here, but not nice enough to spend a long time, so today we are heading for Padangbai where we will stay for a night before getting a boat to the Gili Islands. The gili islands has no cars, and no mopeds - so looking forward to being able to cross the road easily and not have the constant hum of mopeds around, followed by a lot of tooting horns!
We will try and get some pictures on soon, but the internet is not very good here so we'll have to have one massive uploading session some time soon!
Hope everyone is well,
Linsey and Jack xxxx
