Last night was a little crazy- I have never known real jet lag before, so it was frustrating for me to keep waking up every few hours. At 3:30 I gave into my body clock and called Theo as it was evening in the UK. It was good to talk to him and I managed to get back to sleep pretty sharpish afterwards.
Despite setting my alarm, I slept through and had a leisurely morning- but unfortunately missed the free breakfast! I then headed out into KK on a hunt for the bus terminal in preparation for the start of my elective tomorrow. Apparently the bus leaves at 7am sharp so I had better not sleep in again! After that, I explored one of the huge shopping malls and treated myself to some yummy lunch at Beyond Veggie, a vegetarian restaurant, would you believe. I got some tasty sweet and sour mushrooms, but had never had mushrooms like this before- they were cut into cubes and tasted so meaty I had to check with the waitress in case I had ordered a meat dish! She was most offended; 'this is a VEGETARIAN restaurant ma'am, no meat!'. Oops. Well at least I now know what to order when I next get a craving for meat or question my sanity on becoming veggie.
After lunch, I walked along the harbour to Jesselton Point and hopped on a speedboat for a very wet roller coaster ride to Sapi Island. Its a gorgeous place, with crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. I saw my first Probiscus monkey playing underneath a nearby tree too! There is so much wildlife here. Even the fish are incredible, and I have only seen as many as here before when I was in Grenada a few years back.
After a very chilled afternoon, the last speedboat whisked us across the waves back to the mainland, where I popped back into the shopping centre for a while to stock up on some grub for tea.
On my way back to the hostel, it started raining, and boy did it rain! I thought I had seen it all, being caught in the monsoon season in India last year, but this was something else altogether. I literally waded back to the hostel and was soaked through, despite my (very meagre) brolly!
Since then, I have been chilling out on the balcony and the cosy sofas here with my book, ready for an early night before my first day at hospital tomorrow.. Fingers and toes crossed I get up in time!
