We headed to Copan supposedly to see the Copan Ruinas but after Tikal, we felt it was enough since we aren´t into ruins and seeing one was enough. In Hondura, just off the Caribbean coast, it´s all about the Bay Islands... After much deliberation for like over a week about whether to go to the islands as it takes a day and half to get there, we finally made up our minds to unwind here for a couple of days - best decision made! Roatan was gorgeous but expensive for backpackers as everything is in US Dollars but it´s still cheap for a top beach destination. Snorkelling was amazing as visibility was clear and we were on a glass-bottom boat. Loved the underwater world and could snorkel all day long but had to check out West Bay (google image this). Roatan is definitely blessed with this beach, pristine white sands and clear water with the reef swimming distance from the beach, cool eating places on the beach too. All in one! Can´t get any better than that! Downside to this place is the irritable sandflies and mossies in the evenings. Cos of this, we catamaran sailed to Utila for 4 hours. So relaxing as it sailed at slow pace while everyone chilled out on the net watching the sunset.
Utila appealed to us as it has a stronger partying scene but the beaches are nowhere as good as Roatan. Still, we happily soaked in the sunrays on the pier and countless dipped in the sea to cool off. Yup, that hot! It is also a slow, welcoming place where locals and visitors interact much more frequently than on Roatan, mainly because everybody is in the same town. Accommodation and lodging noticeably cheaper here, especially cocktails of about 1 quid. Makes you squirm at London prices! Hung out with this fun group of 6 Irasali soliders who were seriously on a tight budget that we had to be conscious of our spending. But to be fair, they´re travelling for 10 months whereas we´re only doing it for 5 weeks so we are pretty much "luxury" backpackers. Spontaneously explored one hidden gem, Jade´s Seahorse which is the island´s must see place! Absolutely amazing decor in its lush gardens, like a fantasy-land with its playful architectural vision challenging attention to EVERY detail of construction. I even filmed it to capture how the scene unfolds like a children´s pop-up book with tiled walkways and mysterious grottos full of shells and marbles.
Partied at Tranquila, beach bar before congregating ontwards to this creative treetantic bar which is this circular treehouse bar swarming with locals and divers. Had my fair share of drama, losing virtually everything for a couple minutes; my purse, my cochlear implant, even my sandals (only to dance salsa better :P) Needless to say, we paid the price with a thumping hangover the following day that was later cured by a good ole English breakfast!
Tip: For those who are inspired to travel Central America, bring US Dollars as I can´t begin to express how much difficulty we´ve had not having US Dollars. Managed to get by but time and energy consuming. A notebook would come in handy too as my ever so loyal Blackberry was useful to arrange onward journeys as wifi is pretty much everywhere. Loads of travellers have laptops these days compared to 5 years ago so do TAKE IT! (With insurance of course).
