Hola!
We spent two nights in San Cristobal because our transportation to Palenque got delayed, thanks to bamba experience. They didnt answer our email so we had to figure out something to do in San Cristobal for another day. It was ok at that point still, cos Anna and Demetrio were staying in Posada Mexico for another night, so we moved there to hang out with them. Also israelis from Puerto Escondido were at the same hostel so we had a blast!
Silja and I went out to a lebanese restaurant with our israeli friends and then we went shopping for a while, until we met Anna at the Zocalo, as agreed. There was some kind of demonstration going on by the Zapatistas and we stayed to watch a theatrical show of the cause. It was quite interesting!
Afterward we planned on going to some museums, but unfortunately they were closed. Also a church we wanted to visit was closed due to a wedding. So we just went for coffee and fooled around mocking the french who try to speak english. No offence Julien, but you sound funny when you say BE CAREFULL!!
In the evening I went out with Anna and Demetrio. We had some good tortas aka sandwiches and liquados, yummy! We tried to find a nice bar where we could have a few coctails so we ended up to the pedestrian street near the zocalo. A man stopped us and started talking to us, trying to guess where we are from and also tried to get us into the bar "Makia". He got so excited when I told him Im from Finland that he tried everything to convince us to go to this bar. We were having a hard time deciding what to do, so this man, Enrique, took my hand and took me upstairs to the bar! So we stayed and had one coctail, because it was too expensive. Can you believe it, a small pina colada was 4,5 euros! We were so used to getting big ones for 3 euros.
We all headed back to the hostel. I had to wake up at 5.30 am so that we could catch the bus to palenque. They picked us up from the hostel at 6.00 am and it took around 3 hours to get to our first stop: agua azul (or agua caca as we call it).
Agua Azul is a big tourist attraction. It is a big waterfall/river/rapid and the water is supposed to be crystal clear, azul colour, but its been raining so much that it was more brown than azul. Thats why we call it Agua Caca. It was nice though, we were walking in the jungle, had mango as lunch and took many pictures! Then we headed to Misol-Ha waterfalls. That was really an impressive experience. The waterfalls were 35 meters and so beautiful! We were allowed to walk behind the falls and it was fantastic! We got a little wet but it didnt matter, we saw many cool creatures (nice snake eg) and the falls looked nice from this perspective too.
Still an hour drive left until Palenque, the most important attraction on this bustrip. It was awful to step out of the air conditioned bus to the middle of the jungle. Uh, the humidity!! So near 100%. It was also very sunny, so you can imagine how hot it was to walk around in jeans... Yes, i had jeans on.
The Palenque ruins were very very impressing too. We walked up on many temples to see the view over the jungle. Its hard to explain this place.. Usually I dont care about the stuff in museums etc, but this was the best "museum" ive ever been to. Its unbelievable how they have built these temples and how well they are preserved. If you ever come to Mexico, go to Palenque.
We planned on staying in Palenque for one night, so that we could leave early in the morning for Guatemala. Maya Bell was the name of the hostel, where we slept under a shelter, in hammocks! It was quite exciting and a little scary to sleep in the jungle where all kind of creatures live. We heard monkeys of some kind making scary sounds through the night, communicating with each other I guess. It sounded like they were killing something.. or just burbing. You should come to hear it yourself, again very hard to explain the sound the made. But wow it was probably the scariest thing Ive seen in a long time, when i woke up a little during the night and in the bushes I saw something shiny.. looked like eyes. Also Silja told me she heard something move and snuffle in the bushes just metres from us.. In a way I was glad to get out of that place.
At six o´clock again, we went to wait for our pick up.. which didnt show. We waited for quite some time and also tried to call. No one answered as it was so early. We took a connectivo (local bus) to Palenque city so we could sort out this mess. When we called again, they said at bamba that we told them too late where we were staying at.. We should have informed them 24 hours before departure.. Funny thing though, because they asked us only 8 hours before departure where they could come and pick us up. We were quite pissed at bamba. Oh well, no use thinking about that. We checked into a hotel which was just 30 pesos more than Maya Bell, and we have a private room, air conditioning, private bathroom, pool in use.. etc. Not bad!
Today we have been relaxing and gathering some energy for our adventure in Guatemala. It should start tomorrow, after two days of delay. Fingers crossed that we ll catch our flight on the 7th.
I think its time to go to bed so i wont be too tired at 6 am in the bus. Buenas noches!! Take care! Oh and enjoy the cold weather in Finland
Love you,
Liisa & Silja
