Arriving In S.A
Durban, South Africa
Writing of travels across South Africa four years on from across the globe in the Solomon Islands is bizarre I guess and maybe a little mad but as I wind up my final three months here, I find myself with plenty of spare time, this month especially as the truck hasn't passed its roadworthy test and as such I am stuck walking.
So here we go.
My experience in South Africa came as a result of an affiliation with the I.P.P.S who launched an exchange program at just the right time for me to get on board. All expenses paid and I wouldn't complain for a second about my first trip overseas but it was a study trip so this one is going to have a lot about plants and the horticultural industry.
I had met my South African counterpart, Iain, in Tasmania during his time in Aus before the trip and as such had had plenty of time to share a beverage and for plans to be laid for a good time in South Africa. I wasn't worried about safety or anything like that but arriving to a late departure in Johannesburg the constant warnings over the loud speaker about not leaving bags unattended it was a surreal realization with thirty hours without sleep, I wasn't in Australia anymore.
Finally I made it to my last flight to Durban and arrived there close to ten pm, Iain was on a high picking me up and though the overly decorated Indian shopping complexes draped in neon green lighting were testing my delirium from lack of sleep, I managed a third or fourth wind to push out another few hours of chatting with my new friends and hosts for the next week or so. I had arrived.
