Slept in this morning- was about 9.45 before either of us woke. So we didn't worry about having any free breakfast.
We decided to just walk today and discover a bit of the city. Very hot and steamy morning. We walked along the river on Clarke Quay first. And then up to Raffles Hotel. It was just as I had imagined it, a lovely old colonial building, with huge verandahs to keep you cool, beautifully maintained, and you could just imagine being there around 1900 or so.
We then went to one of the malls ( there are so many here, if all you wanted to do was shop, you could go to different one every day for a month I think- but that is NOT me!!). Found a great food court there, like a hawkers market, all healthy and fresh Asian food. We had a delicious seafood mee goreng there for $5 for lunch.
We then went down to a MRT station to have a look. Trains (all underground) are cheap here and the stations are incredible- so spacious and clean, you could eat off the floor! No graffiti or rubbish anywhere. I think Melbourne could learn a thing or two from them! In fact all of Singapore is incredibly clean.
Kept walking on till we got to the Singapore Flyer, a huge wheel like the London Eye. By this time it was quite stormy and raining heavily. We thought we would wait it out for a while and then go on it as it looked like it would clear up soon. Unfortunately this did not happen and by the time we were up there it was actually worse, so we didn't get as good a view as we had hoped. Was still a great experience though. Each capsule can hold 28 people, there were about 10 on ours. The flyer is right next to the Grand Prix track, which of course impressed Lauri. You also got a good view of the Marina Bay Hotel, a really impressive but crazy looking building. It is three huge towers with what appears to be a ship balancing on top. Not sure what the architects were on when they designed that!! If the weather is better tomorrow we may go up to see the view from the top- it is much taller than the flyer. They also have an infinity pool up there which overlooks the whole city. But apparently you can only see that if you stay the night and rooms are about $500 per night for the cheapest ones. So maybe not!!
We got back to the room about 6pm, and then went up to the Crystal Club for some evening drinks and munchies. Just lovely, they kept pouring the wine, and there was plenty of finger food. Got talking to a British couple there and didn't leave until after 8pm. We then walked back to Clarke Quay. It was absolutely packed being a Saturday
night. Food and drinks were very expensive though(like Melbourne prices), but we noticed that the 7/11 on every corner were doing a roaring trade!! All the locals go in there and buy their drinks (they sell most types of alcohol there), and then sit on the bridges and have a great time. So we decided to join them, got our couple of bottles, I had a breezer and Lauri had a bourbon and coke and took in the atmosphere on the bridge! Had a great night. Got back after midnight some time.
