We left the free campsite called Curtin Springs at 6am, which rivalled William Creek, in having the worst showers in living memory. Ants, Crickets, Spiders, Mosquitoes, this place had the lot. Having stopped on the way to cook some breakfast in what was soon becoming an uninhabitable cooking area, in the back of our disgusting campervan, we arrived at Kings Canyon at 10am and did the 7km walk around the rim of the Canyon. The first 15 minutes of the walk consisted of walking up a steep gradient of rocks. As if I hadn't had enough of walking, looking, and taking pictures of big rocks by now. The heat and the first 15 minute of the walk being one of hell of a steep climb, made the rest of the 2 and half hour walk to be a very tough one indeed. There were some great views and good photo opportunities, but I think I had enough by that point. Some people I have spoken to since think Kings Canyon is much more superior to Uluru. I thought Kings Canyon was good and you could see it for miles when we were travelling away from it, but it doesn't have the cultural and religious significance that Uluru possesses.
We then had a choice to make after the walk around Kings Canyon. We either went back through the MacDonnell Ranges on a road which was only recommended for use if we had a four wheel drive, or we go back on the Sealed road, and travel over 200km of that road that we've already travelled on before. We chose the sensible option in the end, as we didn't want to incur fines from the campervan hire company for wrecking the camper on bumpy unsealed roads. We set off at 3:15pm and I ideally wanted to arrive in Alice Springs before 8:30pm as I wanted a bed in the hostel for the night and the reception closed at half 8. We only had one stop on the way, which was forced due to lack of fuel. It was a race against time, but we finally arrived outside the hostel at literally half past 8 on the dot. I took my stuff out of the camper and checked into a room for the night in a decent bed, as I think 4 nights in the back of that horrible thing on wheels was more than enough for a lifetime.
The last instalment of the 'Road trip journey from Adelaide to Alice' will be on the Alice Springs Blog.
P.s. We decided after only travelling 60km north of Adelaide that we never ever wanted to play Eye spy ever again.
Cya soon.
