Named after the Dutch explorer that founded New Zealand, Abel Tasman national park was pretty nice. We didn't do that much there though as it the weather was pretty miserable. I just did a fairly moderate walk, and took in the fairly nice landscape. It was similar to a lot of places we've stayed really, in that the hostel/campsite lodges were in the middle of nowhere, and the usual typical NZ activities were on offer, such as kayaking, sky diving, and the not as popular horse riding. The thing I have learnt from travelling with Stray is that they pride themselves on 'taking you off the beaten track'. What they really mean however is that they take you into the absolute middle of bloody nowhere. That seems to be the South Island in general though, it's got lovely surroundings and not many people living in it.
After a full day at the Abel Tasman national park, we went to Barrytown. The general consensus from everyone after our visit was that is was hmm...crap. We stayed in what really can only be described as a pub with some dorm rooms attached to the back. The showers were cold, and I'd have settled for that, but it just feebly trickled. The good thing was that we got there at 6pm and we were leaving at 11am, so we managed to get a nice lie in. There was also a free pool table so I played pool to my hearts content all evening.
It was then onto what alot of people say is there highlight of New Zealand........The Franz Josef Glacier.
