So today was our last full day in Burma and we hoping to do a little sightseeing today. We headed down relatively early to get the included breakfast. It consisted of yum-yums, jam sandwiches and bananas accompanied with lovely sweet coffee. Everything is so sweet in Burma, the one thing that needed to sweet, the yum-yums weren't. After eating breakfast me met up with our new companions Kratos and Zdenek with all intentions to go and explore the town. I put my longyi on try and mingle in with locals and we headed out into the heat of the dusty, narrow streets.
The main difference between Yangon and Mandalay is that motorbikes are allowed here so you have the constant bikes flying past you at a hairs breath and constant beeping and revving. Our first mission was to find a taxi driver to give us a reasonable price to the airport tomorrow. We asked around at a travel agents and drivers on the street and generally got very inflated prices. We were a bit disheartened and everyone had the same feeling, we could murder a beer. We were walking down a street parallel to the moat surround the old palace grounds which are used as military encampment now. We found very expensive bar and decided to keep looking. Luckily just down a road a local bar with 500 kyat beer (35p) lured us in and the drinking began. Scarily we managed to get through a total of 23 beers between us although Zdenek, from the Czech Republic downed half of them. He did look a little worse for wear afterwards however. The post drinking munchies then set in and all of had yesterday's buffet in my mind.
We left the bar and headed to restaurant about 15 minutes walk away. Laura found the post office but the stamps were really expensive, she was misinformed on the stupidly cheap stamps you apparently get here. Nearly to the restaurant I realised I had left my hat at the previous bar, although it was falling to bits it had been through a lot with us so we had to back and get it. At the bar we had been speaking to a Burmese taxi driver who was trying to get to go with him tomorrow and left his business card. On arriving back at said bar the hat was gone and apparently the driver had taken it. This was obviously to get us to phone him and help his cause for us to use him. Of course the number didn't work and my hat was all but lost. We mourned it and said farewell but I guess I needed a new one anyway!
We continued our journey to the buffet and feasted gluttonously until our bellies were full and aching. We had overindulgence again and we all agreed to crawl back to the hotel. Luckily half way back we were stopped by a random taxi driver and asked him about sightseeing then taking us onto the airport tomorrow. We gave a reasonable price and we trusted our instincts and shook hands to see him in the morning. On arriving back the hotel we all felt like being sick from eating too much and we all silently went our separate ways.
The evening did not bring much excitement except a free coffee from the hotel. Laura felt really bloated and I comforted her for the evening and rested for our trip back to Thailand tomorrow...
