This morning we woke early feeling exhausted... Despite our respite from early morning temple visits and such, we still hadn't slept well since arriving in Varkala. Steven was starving and headed to the beach to grab some breakfast while I stayed in the room and tried to rest... However by about nine thirty I was bored and wandered towards the beach where I found him in a cafe munching on a dosa. I joined him and ordered a tea and we sat and enjoyed the view for a while before heading to the beach, the guy in the cafe didn't have change so told us to just pay him later... Very trusting.
We headed down to the beach and laid on the sand reading our books and enjoying the cool breeze that was ever present. Steven alternated between jumping in the sea and reading game of thrones while i lounged like a beached whale haha. It's the strangest sea here and in some spots it is shallow for miles out while in other parts you walk six foot out and can barely keep your head out of the water... And the current is very strong. It has cool waves though and you often see the surfers out first thing in the morning. It's also a very clean beach and your pretty much left alone, apart from the odd mango seller, which is quite refreshing and very Unindian. There are a lot of hippy types here and I think we feel more out of place here the we did in the depths of Delhi ....we are seriously lacking in the baggy trousers and sun kissed look.. We look like we are on a package holiday.... It's very relaxed though and everyone seems friendly.
By midday I was feeling a bit peckish and so we headed to a juice bar on the front. It's quite a place... Offering all sorts of concoctions such as the liver detoxer and the hangover cure. I settled on a beet root, pineapple and grape blend and it was pretty tasty, also ordered some toast but Steve ate most of it lol... We then chilled on the sea front reading and relaxing. I'm reading 'the pillars of the earth' and can't seem to put it down! Steven headed back to the hotel about twelve to sort the rooms out and came back looking happy as we are now on the second floor in a bigger room with a balcony. We rested some more before heading back to the hotel about two thirty so I could chat with Lacey. After a while I feel asleep on the bed and didn't stir for about two hours when I found Steven on the terrace booking hotel rooms and doing 'admin' while sipping on neat rum in his enamel cup.
I went for a shower.... Which was hot!! Whoop whoop and then chilled on the terrace with a rum and coke while Steven freshened up, Lacey was now on line so we had a good chat and exchanged gossip... Was so nice. Miss my girlfriends loads. By now it was nearly seven so Steven was pacing behind me indicating that I should wrap it up! So we said our emotional goodbyes and hung up... Was feeling a little home sick now and in dire need of some british home cooked comfort food.
We headed to the beach front and stopped at Abbas again as I knew they did meatballs and mashed potato... Just what I fancied so in we went and ordered. Steven enjoyed a fish curry and naan while I devoured my meatballs, creamy mash and boiled veg... And they even had HP sauce!! ..yummy! We then paid our bill and wondered home stopping at the shop to buy water and Oreos. Once back at the hotel we climbed in to bed, read for a while and fell asleep.
