Upon waking from our slumber I felt a lot better.... The light was streaming in from the newly found window and I felt rested. I realised my freak out earlier was probably a lot to do with tiredness and I actually really liked the room. It's at the back of the hotel and therefore so quiet which I'm sure is a rare thing here.
Steven, who was still sleeping about six foot away from me... The bed is that big! Soon woke up and declared he was heading for the shower. Some fiddling later and the shower was working... Amazing pressure, very spacious but not very hot ha-ha, was a small price to pay and was actually very refreshing! I was quite happy as I had managed to get the hair dryer to work and was in the process of drying my hair.
We thought as our first job of the day, we would sit in the lobby and send home messages that we are safe and well... However Internet wasn't working so I suggested a look around Delhi. We walked about thirty yards to the right and then came back in to the safety of the lobby. The place is crazy... Cars tooting and people everywhere, it was warm on leaving but not too warm and the air smells spicy. Stray dogs roam around and auto rickshaw drivers taut for business. We spoke to the reception guy and through broken English told us to go left, so we did... We walked miles around Old Delhi taking in the sights and sounds towards Connaught place! The hub of Delhi. We blended quite well as we were dressed modestly and I had a light scarf on but that didn't stop us getting looks and after walking around for a few hours I could see why... We hadn't come across any other tourist and were the only backpackers around.
People would either stare or smile and say hello, some ask for money and some ask you to buy something! Majority of people just leave you to it. It's an incredibly lively place, cars absolutely everywhere as well as auto rickshaws, rickshaws and bikes! People walk around everywhere and traffic stops for them, they walk along with the traffic ...mainly because the sidewalks are full of holes or people. It's quite amazing to see, people load up their rickshaws so high you wonder how they don't topple over and hundreds of people cram on to the bus. The smell in Delhi varies massively, some parts smell like wonderful spices or roasted almonds, while others smell like a festival porta loo. It is a unique place though and the people seem friendly but after hiking around all day it was lovely to enter the cool and serene environment of our hotel.
On returning we managed to get on line and update everyone before heading for dinner... I had a yummy vegetable jalfrezi with rice and naan and Steven had a biryani and naan and all for about four English pounds, which is actually quite expensive here but we thought we would be safe and eat in tonight... Explore again tomorrow and hopefully find a nice restaurant. As for now... Steven is snoozing next to me and I am shattered so bed for me! Night x
