Okay, so no blog entry in the whole of Oz is pretty bad!! I did actually write up the whole of Christmas, NYE and Melbourne but lost it on the upload cry S0 what I'll do is split everything up into sections and hopefully I won't miss anything out!
Sydney - 12th - 20th December – Alfred Park Hostel
I loved this place mainly because of the fab people we met here. Alex and Lisa first then Jo and Mike moved in the next day. We pretty much spent the whole week together (and NYE) which was lovely. Our first day was filled walking the entire length of Sydney on no sleep as we waited for our check in time. It was so hot and we got lost a few times (and were completely ignorant of the free shuttle bus that circuits the city, doh!). But we saw the opera house and the bridge which was such a surreal moment – a definitely “We're in Oz” moment! Due to all our walking and overnight flight our first Saturday in Sydney was a total write off so we slept, probably made Lisa and Alex think we were total bores!
The Sunday was a gorgeous day (but at this stage we were still naïve enough to think that every day in Sydney is a gorgeous day. Wrong) so we went to Bondi. I'm absolutely gutted that I didn't take my camera, it was gorgeous. Totally generic don't get me wrong but iconic enough so you could forget that! And we bumped into Rhian and Natalie from our Thailand tour which was lovely!
The rest of the week was spent going to the bar that was connected to Wicked and we got our nails done for free and the very lovely Mike, being the only male, was patient and lovely as ever :) The Tuesday we caught the ferry to Manly and it was probably one of the last lovely days we had in Sydney until my birthday. Heidi, Lisa and Alex's friend joined us and we spent most of the time faffing to get there, then once there, spending all our money in the cheap gift shop. Got myself an Aussie beach towel and $5 sun cream, bargain! I loved Manly, it would definitely be the place I would live if I moved to Sydney.
On the Friday the rain started to fall and it actually got really cold! This is when I realised I had nothing suitable to wear for sub-25 degree temps. The usual 7 suspects spent Friday night in Luna Park, a quaint Oz theme park that is just down right weird! Me and Heidi spent some time getting to know eachother as we kept our money for beer and pizza whilst everyone else went round the rides. They had the most wicked ride I've seen and me and Heidi we're dying watching the guys do it. Basically, everyone stands against the wall in this round room, it starts spinning then the floor moves away and everyone is stuck against the wall it's mad!
Saturday was fab from start to finish! We bumped into Nicky Adams, someone I went to school with and who I hadn't seen for a good five years! We were on the way to Carols in the Domain in Hyde Park and Mike and Rhi stopped in a random hole in the wall cafe for some brekkie. Out of the corner of my eye I could see someone staring at me. When I looked all I heard in the thickest Llan accent was “No way!!” it was so lovely to see him!
Carols in the Domain is this huge televised carol event to try and make everyone in Australia believe it's Christmas when it's a thousand degrees outside! I was so fricking excited because Ronan Keating was going to be there but it turned out he was the only “live link” the whole day, gutted!! Phoned my mam in all my excitement too and thought it funny that it didn't click when she said he was going to be on the lottery show in the UK the next day, doh! Katherine Jenkins was there, for those of you with kids the Wiggles(? Think that's what they're called!), and for those of you over the age of 75 Englebert Humperdink! Oh and Leo Sayer too how could I forget him?! It was a seriously awesome night and probably the only time I felt Christmassy in the whole of December! Highlights of the day we're definitely Jo and Mike turning up unannounced in Mr and Mrs Claus outfits, so good! Us spending most of the day colouring in, much to the amusement of those around us with actual kids and my turkey sandwiches yum yum!!
That Sunday it was time to temporarily say goodbye to Mike and Jo as we headed to Wake Up! To be continued....I bet you're all in suspense about what happened six weeks ago!
