After an interminable wait in cusco airport of a seemingly never-arriving amazonas plane it arrived, scooped us up, dipped into Arequipa and pushed east to La Paz.
4050m above sea level is 4045m above our usual home altitude, but I expect we will adjust quickly.
The taxis (plural) picked us and our luggage off the floor and sordid from El Alto to La Paz. La Paz is a sprawling half built city of 1.4M souls - and our hotel is smack dab in the middle! Traffic is mental squared - I thought Peruvian drivers were hardcore, they have nothing on Bolivians!
After casing our suite were went on a western union office cash hunt, recouping the Nazca refund, but we were just too late, all the bank offices had shut for the weekend, but a feature of all ATMs is that their users are protected from the street by stepping into a booth separated from the street by a toughened glass door. Nice safety touch in a big, new city.
The La Paz vibe is instantly infectious - stalls line seemingly every street, nowhere is level, and we are all out of breath after only a few yards walking, but Jude's football shirt obsession allows plenty of window-shopping recovery time.
Crazy, crazy place - llama foetus anyone? Only a few bolivianos!
