Preparing for my GSL trip I had high expectations for a life changing experience filled with opportunities to meet new people, immerse myself in a new culture, learn from others, and grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. However due to the ambiguous nature of the program, I couldn't really conceptualize the activities that would catalyze such changes. After a few days of diligent packing and hours of traveling, stepping onto Indian soil and driving through this distinct culture to the SVYM hostel was exhilarating. Despite our extreme jet-lag, upon arriving to the hostel after a short break we immediately adopted the Indian time schedule of eating and sleeping. Over the next two weeks myself along with the 16 other students from Cornell attended classes, explored the city of Mysore, visited religious sites, hospitals, etc. Monday through Friday we attended classes at which several professors from a variety of fields lectured about topics ranging from Labor Economics to Gender Issues in India. Some of my favorite lectures were those of Dr. Balu (the founder of SVYM), whose extensive knowledge about healthcare, politics, organizational management, etc. never ceases to amaze me. While reading about India and attending lectures in the US about India could have increased my awareness of Indian politics, culture and tradition, having courses taught by Indian Professors was immeasurably important to gaining a more authentic, honest view of Indian society. These courses provided me a unique experience to interact with and learn from knowledgeable, experienced Indians—and immerse myself in Indian society.
