The Journey
After spending the best part of this year planning a route and buying gear to take with me I finally packed all my stuff into the rucksack I had bought. Non travellers should be made aware that when putting what will essencially be your mobile wardrobe, bathroom and study onto your back it feels like a bear cub trying to put you in a sleeperhold. No-one is going to be doing casual jogs for a late train without sweating your body weight out.
Having said goodbye to everyone I got into the car and my Dad and Stepmum drove me to Heathrow where I managed to book in and confirm the seat I'd picked online two weeks ago. After having a final meal I wandered through to departures. One security check later and I actually starting to get excited to the point where I was just grinning. This is the start. The grin went when as I went to get on the plane I was taken aside for a 'random security check' again. It must be the cleanly shaven head that made them see me as a dirty terrorist. They never verbalised it but they're eyes told me all I needed to know.
So this is me, on a plane to Fiji for the first leg of my journey. A nice combination of two twelve and one two hour connecting flights. Air New Zealand is not bad but their entertainment system is a bit glitchy. I cant complain though as I'm sitting at a window with an empty isle seat to my right. Lots of room. Also the trolly dolly is hot but I would consider that a requirement like oxygen coming out of the crash masks. Speaking of which I'm no bad flyer but there's been a fair bit of turbulance. Not yet to the extent of our flight back from Latvia but still enough for me to check the wing doesnt have a gremlin on it. I think Im more concerned as we're way higher than most european routes and so theres more distance to drop out of the sky. As Billy Connelly put it 'In the extremely unlikely event of all four engines failing you'll hit the ground like a f***ing dart'. I'll attempt to watch another couple of films and write again after leaving LA (where no doubt I'll have my most invasive search yet). Time isnt going too slowly which is cool. Might need a stretch soon though.
