Global Adventure '06
Hi guys,
another blog from queenstown just to let you know how I got on with canyoning. Wow, wow, wow. One of the most thrilling, exciting days ever, sadly there are no pics, as it's a very small operation and it goes where no one else does. But I'll try and get some of the starting point for my daredevil dayout. You start off getting dressed in very thick wet/dry suits, then you don rubber socks and booties, the it's on with a slimline life jacket head sock and helmet, then comes a harness. After all that you walk for about 30mins up a gradual incline to where we started the day. It was a very intimate group only 3 of us me and a couple Marianna and Bill and 2 instructor guides, John and Charlie.
The first thing they got us to do was get wet by sliding us upside down down a slippery rock into a pool. Then it was on to the first jump a pretty daunting affair. Bout 6m high into a pool only a couple of metres wide, after that it was climbing rockfaces around the edge down to the next bit where we abseiled down over a waterfall and were then dropped into another pool. You get the idea, a whole series of abseiling rock climbing with safety ropes over slippery wet mossy rocks then jumping off up to 7-8m high cliffs into pools not wonderfully deep deepest about 3m and about 2-4m wide or round, you learn a way to jump into these pools. I had so much fun especially the slides and the jumps. In one place we ran back up the cliff to do it all again. You have to completley trust the guys you're with, and they were top guys. The views were spectacular and hardly anyone sees these views of the river like this as it cascades down over falls into pools and carves out smooth round slides. Truly a wonder of nature. Wow, wow, wow, such a cool day, gnarly, awesome, extreme, yeahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame you won't get to see me in the suit though. I looked hot. By the way the water temperature was very cold as it was watre that ran straight off from snowmelt at the top of the mountain. We finished up eventually where we had started, quite quickly as there was only 3 and we didn't have to wait around too long in between which was good, but the sun was hot and shining when we came out from the shade of the canyon and we soon warmed up with the small trek back to the van. It was fantastic, I'd do it again. Got to go, cheers lots of gnarly extremme wishes go out to you guys,
