Global Adventure '06
Back in OZ guys, after 5 days in Fiji, feeling exhausted but so happy, the last 5 days have gone very quickly. We stayed on South Sea island for a couple of nights which is about 45 mins by ferry to the main island Vita Levu. It takes 9mins and 27secs to walkaround. South Sea Island and you can see the sunrise and sunset over the south pacific ocean within 30 secs of each other cos that's how long it takes to cross the island. It's highest point is less than a metre above sea level. It is so beautiful and the few people who work there are the friendliest most welcoming people I've ever met (Dave). You know this when you're hugging the staff when it comes to leave. We spent the daytime swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, volleyball, snorkeling and eating on an island that only has about 20-30 people on every night. We spent the nightime swimming, eating, playing drinking games, crab racing and generally getting to know the other castaways. It's a beautiful island surrounded by coral reefs, myriads of fish and neon blue starfish. We met 2 of the most wonderful people, no names, pink power to you, rainbow, ankles, pole dancing, abulamatata, you know who you are. So lovely was the time we spent on the island that a few tears were shed on leaving, but we've taken away some very sweet memories. Let's also not forget Luke from Pensylvania(apologies for the spelling), whose T-shirt I borrowed (mine was quite rank) and whose superglue Claire borrowed, also a fellow pink power team member and a lovely human being.
I've been chief for the day, Claire was chief spokeswoman. We visited a nearby island where we met with the Fijian chiefs, Sam if you get a few letters from some Fijian chiefs don't be surprised. Although I hope they don't decide to visit you. Visited a shell market and met some local, cheeky, very cute fijian children one of whom cried when Claire looked at him. Making small children cry. What an awful thing to do. We engaged in a Kava drinking ceremony my second in 5 days. Me being chief I had to sit opposite the village chiefs and drink the first bowl of Kava. It involves lots of clapping, a blessing then downing the Kava in one, and is basically us seeking permission to visit them and their other island, which is the island where they filmed Castaway the movie. Tom Hanks had to perform the same ceremony in order to film. Kava is a pepper tree root dried and ground up, it's a relaxant of sorts, but it can get you a bit stoned if you drink enough of it apparently. I made it through customs with my ground up tree root. We sent the dodgy looking package I'd been given by the shopkeepers in Nadi back to Dave with a postcard, and I bought some slightly more official looking powder at the airport to try on my return. Sam expect a parcel in the next few weeks. Anyway check out the cool photos, our friends Helen1 and Helen2, also took lots of photos including pole dancing, tree hugging, sandwich time, and many more, which when we get them we'll add to the site too. Time to go now, 11.30pm here in Sydney, maybe down to O'malleys for a swift half before turning in. Lots of love to all our friends old and new missing you already, Pete and Claire xx
