Day 5
Discover Egypt
I get up this morning and go down to the lobby to meet Jen and Briana as we are off to see the unfinished obelisk. We take a taxi which I'm sure looking back on it we got ripped off on but never mind. The unfinished obelisk is about 80 meters long and was being carved out of the granite quarry in Aswan. It was carved using round pieces of granite which they just kept on hitting against the rock to wear it away. This task must have been sole destroying and even more so when it cracked when they were over have way through it. If it had of been completed it would have been the tallest in the world. We leave and head back to the hotel with just enough time to pack. At around midday we are taken to our Felucca which is a large Egyptian sale boat. We get on board and are very surprised on how comfortable it is with a toilet and shower. On the lower deck the floor is covered by mattresses and tomorrow night this will be where we will all be sleeping. We set sail and slowly move north down the Nile. It is so peaceful and life just seems to drift by without a care in the world. By about 19:00 we moire the boat on the bank and are taken to our accommodation for the night. This is a Nubian home and we are welcomed in by our hosts. The house belongs to the sister in law of I guy I met in Cairo on my last trip called Jay Jay. He is also the owner of the Felucca we are staying on (www.captan Jamaica.com).
We are shown our room which is the otherwise of a massive court yard. The room is simple just a large room with mattresses and pillows on the floor. We are served dinner in the court yard and we sit on the floor eating in our group. Our hosts don't join us as that would be seen as bad manners and they won't eat until we are finished. The food is great and we eat well again. We sit and drink mint tea for a while after dinner and then all hit the sack.
