It must have been fun being an early explorer of Australia. Fighting off the mossies, spiders and snakes, they did at least get to name a few things along the way.
We've just spent a bunch of time driving down the East Coast from Cairns to the Gold Coast, and, as anyone who has spent any time on the roads in Australia will know, you cross a lot of creeks, all presumably named by their discovers.
Some are obvious (Sandy Creek, Deep Creek), some useful (5 Mile Creek, 12 Mile Creek), others you hope weren't too much of a shock (Crocodile Creek and Alligator Creek spring to mind).
Plenty are indigenous names, which I'd probably spell as well as their initial guesses, and plenty are named after what I like to imagine were members of the party (Williamson Creek, Jordan Creek).
But one stood out, and I feel he must have been the least popular member of the party. They'd been hauling and sweating and chopping their way through the jungle while he sat at the back, whistling and fanning himself with a large fern. But his name was saved for posterity - Bradford's Bog. I bet the rest of the team loved that.
