Visited the Chauchilla cemetery where mummies of the Nazca people were buried around 2000 years ago.
Important people were beheaded when they died, and the head was mummified and buried. It was thought the head was a 'seed' which would grow into a new person in the afterlife. This is also what they did to an unborn foetus.
When they died, the top warriors and holymen of the community were sacrificed in their honour as well as two animals, including a fox. The fox was believed to be the only animal that could see into the dark and guide the spirits to the afterlife.
Also visited the pottery museum where they showed us how they make the pottery and polish it. Some interesting karma-sutra figures on display!
Have a 10 hour night bus tonight to Arequipa- first time we ascend pretty high (2300m)
