Well kids, I don't know what to say. Africa is certainly not what I was expecting in many ways. I am currently living in the village of Medie. It is small and still has a village chief. I am staying at Bernard's family compound, so things seems small and safe there. The school children love all the Oberininis, white people, in the village. We went to a school yesterday. The kids are always skipping out to come see what we are doing at the compound. I spend roughly 6 hours a day drumming and Eddie says I he and I need to start working one on one in the afternoon break on my technique. Learning drums the African way has been very challenging. There are no written rhythms and I often can't tell the difference in the drum strokes as Eddie is playing the rhythms. I am pretty frustrated and disappointed with myself about all this. The diet has taken some getting used to as well. It is very basic... Rice, pineapple, and chicken/goat (which we all know I won't eat). We did have banku last night which was amazing! I tend to sleep a lot in the afternoons to escape the heat of the day. It is brutal here, although the day is only about 11 hours long from sun up to sun down. I won't be putting up many pictures because I'm on a dial-up connection. I can't wait to come home and see you all and share my stories. I miss everyone terribly!
Love,
Jennifer
