On the 4th we left for Kampot, a place next to Kep where I already was for some relaxation. We had one thing planned for the next days and that was visiting Bokor Hill Station. This is an abandoned colonial villa on the top of a mountain from the time that France colonised Cambodia. We decided to rent some scooters to ride up the hill ourselves and that was the best idea we had so far. I never rode a scooter before but it was easy to master and the ride up the mountain was very cool. It was full of corners and beautiful sights along the road. Nice landscapes, the sun and my brother with me. It was about one and a half hour to the top and when we reached the platform we first visited a waterfall.
The waterfall wasn't all that impressive for me, since I compare it to the big one in Thailand, but it was nice to see. Daan wasn't all that impressed either but he was happy anyway. The next stop was Bokor Hill Station and along the way we passed some ridicilous buildings. Someone came up with the brilliant idea to build a casino on top of the hill, next to a way too big hotel. We also saw outlines of huge villa parks that are to be build in the near future. A shame of the natural environment. At Bokor Hill Station we should have had a great view over the landscape but it was all shrouded in clouds. We literally drove through clouds on our way there so it was kind of cool as well. The station itself wasn't that good but the ride made it all worth it.
We drove down again, stopping for some nice pictures along the way. We ate some food from the stands next to the road in Kampot and drove to Kep. I wanted to show Daan the place where I stayed before, the beach and the scenery over there. The next day we would go there again.
We stopped on our way to Kep at a few things. First we went to a cave. It was really cool to see and we went in to climb and crawl a bit as well. It used to be a hideout for Cambodians during the Khmer Rouge period and we could see some, very small, leftovers from that time. From the cave we went on to a so called 'secret lake'. It was a very big lake and there were some houses located around the lake. There was one restaurant where you could eat something. We went in for a small swim and the water was really nice and warm. After half an hour, we continued our way to go to the Pepper Plantation in Kep that I already visited and we tried to find some salt fields as well.
We didn't succeed in finding the salt fields but we did find a nice place to have lunch. We were in a open wooden hut with hammocks and we ordered some noodles and a coconut to drink from (for an apple and a egg haha). The final stop was Kep beach where we did our infamous newyearsdive with the Unox caps (sponsored by Ed & Plet:D) that Daan brought along.
After two days of riding the scooters, we wanted to relax a bit more. We had a one and a half hour traditional Khmer oil massage after getting a nice breakfast with pancakes and a brownie. Rough life in Kampot. We will just wander around town for the rest of the day, trying out some typical Khmer dishes in the local restaurants while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.
Just now we booked a guesthouse in Ream, not far from here. The major attractions are the beach and the sun and in addition a national park nearby. We plan to do some hiking through the park and some beach time ofcourse. We will see what other stuff we might do. One thing is for sure and that is that we will be in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) on the 12th of January so we intend to catch a nightbus to get there.
