Helen's Travels
We flew to Alice Springs and went on a three day tour to Uluru.
This was our trip into the outback, complete with about a million flies - we definitely regretted not getting one of the flattering fly nets within about a minute of getting there!
The first day we went to the Olgas and did a walk through the Valley of the Winds - all very pretty and as you'd expect red! We left the Olgas to drive to see the sunset at Ayres Rock. With a glass of champagne in hand we watched the rock change colours as the sun dropped down. You couldn't actually see that much change as you were stood there but from flicking back through my photos there was definitely a significant change!
The next day we rose early to see sunrise over Ayres Rock, and it was the day that were had the opportunity to climb it. Jenny and I were all ready to go, but unfortunately the climb was closed due to high winds at the summit, I've got the photo as proof!! We were absolutely gutted but did the other option which was the base walk. We set off on the base walk which was good but no climb! The rock has aboriginal art at various parts of it, and a lot of it is sacred so no pictures etc can be taken. As well there are lots of stories about various parts of the rock in terms of how they got there shape which were very enlightening. About half way around the rock it began to throw it down, and we got absolutely drenched! By the end of the walk I could wring my fleece out, this was even more annoying because we'd taken our anoraks out of our bags and left them on our seat in the bus!! Apparently it's a very rare sight to see the rock with waterfalls but we managed it!
That afternoon we left the rock and drove to near Kings Canyon for the evening camping. We walked around Kings Canyon the next day which I thought was better than the rock. The formations of it were amazing. We walked down to the "garden of eden" (a little lake in the middle of the canyon), and saw the ampitheatre. The walk was really good, and not as hard as our guy made out - with a name like "heart attack hill" we were slightly concerned!
