Today was “Safari Madeira” day which is a full day safari from hotel overtop the mountains to the northwest corner of Madeira. All this in an open air 4x4 Jeep vehicle.
Pickup up 830am and one more couple and off we go with Kerry/sue on one side of back bench Dom and I the other
The ride and view was incredible. Our driver explained the history of island and how they used fire to burn down areas of the forest 600 years ago, so they could start building communities. That lead to deforestation and landslides, so they imported Australian eucalyptus trees as they have a root system that is capable of penetrating deep into the earth and rock. Thus stabilizing the ground, BUT
This worked extremely well, except the eucalyptus is a oily plant and is one of the first tress to ignite on fire. So now they are trying to manage the plant but it is a resilient tree. Interesting
Anyway we crossed the mountain via dirt and clay roads which was a lot of fun then made our way to Porto moniz where for 10 euros each we got bread, two bottle of wine, soup, fresh caught grilled tuna or steak, salad, rice and French fries finishing it off with fruit cocktail and coffee.
Then it was swimming in a natural area of the beach that protects swimmers from the crashing waves by the use of a natural rock shelf.
That was fun
Then back in the Jeep and to the top of the mountain again where we walked in top of a plexiglass walkway 580meters above the ocean. Crazy cool and no charge Wwwhhhhaaaaattttttt u say
Then back home
Beers and wine and decide on supper
Tomorrow is travel day with a tough one in store. Flight to Porto bright and early arriving at 8 am then 12 hour layover for a flight to bilboa. What we will do During layover yet to be determined.
Talk later
