THURSDAY 12TH APRIL
Apparently Songkran had started a day. After eating lobster and drinking champagne at the Oyster Bar in Kata, the group split and Kurt took the 2 of us off to find some nice bars as we'd got all dressed up (washed our hair and everything!). We got out the tuktuk at the end of a busy Soi (sidestreet) & ventured down for a drink. The first thing to welcome us was a supersoaker straight in the face, the second was a whole bucket of water straight over the head! Both followed by a hosepipe drenching all 3 of us! The 2 pretty girls that went out were now no longer so pretty, with soaking wet hair and mascara streaking down their faces, all the Thai girls laughing at us westerners coming out so unprepared. It was one of the best night we've ever had and soon we were the ones soaking anyone and everyone who walked past the bar, showing no mercy to who they were, what their age, what they were wearing or carrying. You couldn't even stand and talk to anyone without someone coming behind and throwing a bucket of water over your head, the Thai people really encouraged us to join in and celebrate their new year with them, and we loved it - beats Auld Lang Syne anyday!
