What it's like to be sky high
Taupo, New Zealand
"Are you ready?" He yells. I'm sitting on the edge of the plane with my legs dangling out. "Give me a high five!" Our hands clasp. "Let's do this" I yell back against the ferocious wind whipping against my face. Together we push ourselves off the edge, and we're falling through the air, tumbling so fast my mind can't think, all I can see is blue, blue everywhere. The force of the fall against my chest is unbearable, and the sound of the wind in my ears is deafening, but my mind is gone, and my body is frozen, all I can do is feel myself rushing through the sky. He taps my shoulder and my brain kicks in. There's my cue to let go of my straps and hold my arms out "Feel the free fall!" he yells, and I do. The air rushing past me is icy cold, all I can do is feel this moment. I see another sky diver out there, I reach out my hand and I'm holding hers nice and tight. I let go, blow her a kiss and she waves goodbye because within a second, the parachute is pulled, and for a good five seconds I feel myself shoot right up further and higher into the sky. "WOOOOH!" we both yell above the clouds.
Then everything slows down, compared to what happened just a few moments ago, it now feels like slow motion. In this part of the sky, we're floating, and it's quiet out here, not a sign of any one else, and I see the world below me, we're so far away, it feels like I'm looking down from heaven. I'm speechless, I'm happy, beyond happy, it's intense euphoria, I'm everything I have never felt before! "It's a BEAUTIFUL day today!" He says with such thrill and passion n his voice. It really is, but I can't speak for I have never ever seen such stunning views. "Look at that, the sky is beautiful for you Tien" I beam inside. I can't get over how unreal it all is. I look up and see the parachute, I look down to see my feet, and all around me is spectacular Lake Taupo- the largest lake in the southern hemisphere. "Do you want to steer?" he asks. "Yes!" I say with excitement. He hands me each handle, and I'm in control now. Just don't let go, I tell myself. I hold them tight, and pull it down to my left hip, we go left and we see incredible volcanoes. I pull down the right handle and we soar right to see the beautiful mountains and rolling hills of New Zealand. "What do you think?" he asks. I don't want to say anything because no words could ever describe everything I was seeing and feeling. But I manage a simple "It's beautiful" for an answer. "Are you feeling nauseous?" he asks."Nope" and we go spinning round and round, til I can't focus my eyes on anything. "We're going to land right there" he points" "I want you to put your knees to your chest and then legs out when I tell you". He steers down to the open field, the ground is nearing, but it's so slow and graceful. "Now" he says. 'No, not now' I think to myself, I just don't want this to ever end.
