Wednesday evening
Another busy but enjoyable day. Beautiful weather and a good feeling within the group. Two more games played. First game was against Ornal from south of Norway. A well organized side that we pushed back throughout almost the entire game. This restricted our space to play in the final third. Dani put us ahead with a good shot on the turn. Aimee almost added a second with a great shot on the that smacked against the bar. Performance a bit flat and some of passing could have been better. Last 20 minutes, some good team passing and a well taken goal from Ellie S at the far post after a great cross from Kelsey. Final score 2 - 0 to Wigton.
Then some chillin time and special treat of McDonalds and Nettos finest for tea put Girls in good spirits for group decider with very strong Staal Jorpeland from Oslo - with us both havng won all our games. The match did not disappoint, with a good crowd and a high level of competitiveness.Wigton had 2 great chances within the first 2 minutes - with Ellie S and then Elle- May getting into good positions but not quite finding the contact they were looking for. The 2 main things that Wigton had to deal with was a very physically strong, athletic and direct opponent and also playing directly into a blinding low sun.We faced the longest throw in expert we have ever come across! Wigton coped well on the whole with both these things, Unfortunately we conceeded the only goal of the game when Leah was unable to see a long shot due to the sun ( a cheesy sounding excuse but absolutely the case). This encouraged Staal and they went very close on 3 more occasions.
The second half Wigton really raising their game and asking most of the questions - although the vagaries of sport naturally meant the sun disappeared behind cloudsl 2 minutes in ! Leah's
goal was not threatened at all, whilst Wigton managed to push the Norweginans back and deliver a good number of balls into a crowded area. Lots of half chances were created but nothing clearcut. So final a 0-1 defeat in a game where a draw would clearly have been fairer - but a really exciting, intensive match, much enjoyed by all concerned. I rarely single out players, especially when the whole team has done well, but I thought Rene and Olivia had absolute blinders.
So the prospect of 2 knock out games tomorrow. A last 16 game against no doubt a very tough Swedish team at 2.30. Hopefully a good nights sleep to come!
