We are now in Melbourne, Victoria!
Our road trip from Adelaide to Melbourne was fantastic. We left Adelaide really early in the morning and met up with our multi-cultural group (mainly Europeans) and climbed up to a peak in the Grampian mountains. A few rock scrambles, tight spaces and edging around mini cliffs later (you'd never be able to do it under Health and Safety in the UK!) we made it. ANd the views were amazing. A few stops later and our stop in some cabins for the night was comfortable.
The following day was another mountain hike but thankfully less arduous than the previous day with stunning views again. The day was hotting up fast and the stop at a beach in the afternoon with little shade really dried us out in the 30+ heat (well, not Chris, who braved all the en masse shark sightings and dipped in the sea). We were thankful to get to our accomodation that night and re-hydrate before going to the Twelve apostles (stone and rock formations over the sea) to watch the sunset and one of our group was a busker and played the bagpipes as the light faded. Just before we left, one of the other tour operators pointed out a black patch on the beach which, after looking carefully, was moving very slowly up the beach. It was a pack of penguins who had returned to the beach to roost!
The last day started with a visit to the cool climate rainforest and a tree top walk. We hit the Ocean road and stopped off to see wild Koalas at one point. The day was cooler and breezy, of which tday has been the same and tomorrow will only hit 21 max with showers forcast. But a break before the next high pressure is good I think.
Our hostel in Melbourne is well positioned and has good facilities (thanks Jason and Natasha and Ruth and Neil) and we ventured to St Kildas last night for food (THE place to be, apparently) as well as today for a look around. We then ventured up to the city for some shopping and a look around and met up with Olivia (contiki, NZ) for a drink and a mini tour, so it was great to see her. Tonights visit to Fifteen was unsuccessful (more on that on return), but please be assured that we will put the wedding gift money for that meal to good use for a different special meal!
Overall, Melbourne is nice but we've seen a lot of destitute people and, quite frankly, weirdos! But we have another day to see some more sights, so the jury's out on the final view until then...
Mum - you have missed a Perth one. Go to the blogs and you can choose which one to read.
