Leaving Beaune this morning we decided to go off piste and instructed Serena (the sat nav) to take us to Chablis without going on any motorways or toll roads. The result was a wonderful couple of hours driving through the Morvan Regional Natural Park and a picnic at the Maison de Parc somewhere in the heart of it. It was very peaceful and a welcome change from the noice and bussle and American tourists in Beaune, although our detour to find a view point did result in an interesting climb up a road with grass growing probably more suited for a 4x4 than the MG.
We arrived in Chablis late afternoon and checked into our boutique B and B over an old Mill. We had an invitaiton from the owners to a wine tasting of their Chablis in their shop up the road so thinking it would be rude not to we took them up on their offer for our pre-dinner drink. This was very pleasant but we then were to discover that Wednesday evening in Chablis is like tumbleweed with virtually all bars/restaurants closed. We found what seemed to be the only one open and looked at the menu in French - didn't understand it so the waitress gave us one in English - still didn't understand it! What are chitterlings or Andouillettes we asked her and she told us a local sausage very good. So we took the risk. I can only say that we agreed with the Wickipedia definition we later discovered: "True andouillette is rarely seen outside France and has a strong, distinctive odor related to its intestinal origins and components." Needless to say we returned both our dishes to the kitchen and ended up wtih Pizza. Despite this Chablis is a lovely little town which produces some gorgeous wine if not sausages!
