Ormiston Gorge (West Macdonnell Ranges) 17th April to 20th April 2011
We travelled along the Mereenie Loop Road to Ormiston Gorge. The road was pretty bad with plenty of corrugation…not what we were expecting for this leg of the trip. But the time pasted quickly and somehow Max managed to do some school work along the bumpy road.
The campground is small and very quiet. There are only about 15 sites and probably half of these are only suitable for tents. Roy was tempted to back the camper into the site we camped on seven years ago…just for old times sake…but we managed to find one flatter and easier to manoeuvre.
The Gorge here is really beautiful. Huge fluorescent orange layered rock walls towering over the water. The Gorge is lined with beautiful gum trees and large smooth boulders (great for climbing over). It is only about a 2 minute walk from the camp area and because of all the rain the Gorge is full of water…great for swimming. It even has a sandy area which we call "the beach".
We saw another dingo in the campground…so now the boys are walking around advising all the other campers to be careful. I am sure Max thinks he is the Ranger and is responsible for the safety and well being of all the other campers.
It has been nice to relax and chill out for a few days.
