Hey All
On Monday morning we went for a drive around Byron Bay, a pretty little town surrounded by beautiful coastlines. We hit the road after visiting Cape Byron and the lighthouse there and headed along the coastal road to a pretty beach deserted called Emerald bay. We had a drive around Coffs Harbour before heading to Nambucca Heads in search of a campsite; everywhere was full though so we drove further along the coast to South West Rocks. On the hunt for a campsite we encountered a huge kangaroo just hopping along a town road! We drove through a national park which was quite spooky in the dark when we finally found a big4 (brand of campsite) that suited us nicely and had a BBQ for dinner then got an early night.
On Tuesday we got up early and headed down to Trial Bay Gaol Beach which was pretty although it seems like an 'older' people's place. We went to Smoky bay lighthouse and walked all the way up to it where we could see all around. The view was amazing - sea for miles! Pete noticed some whales jumping out of the water so we watched them for a while before continuing our coastal drive. We stopped at a few viewpoints and lighthouses along the road and a some beautiful beaches too. We stopped for lunch at a bakery further inland in the town of Bulahdelah. It was so hot compared to the coastal towns it was mad! Must have been mid 30's. We carried on driving (for hours and hours) along winding roads before reaching the gorgeous 'Yengo' national park. We drove adjecent to the river winding through little towns with pretty houses and well kept gardens before finally finding an empty campsite near Wiseman's Ferry Town on the Hawkesbury River.
On Wednesday we headed for the Blue Mountains. We stopped in Windsor, a 'historic town' where we had lunch at a pretty cafe opposite an old colonial post office. We got back on the road to go to the Blue Mountains and... oh dear... we started up the first hill and the temperature gauge on the car started climbing rapidly! We popped the bonnet and water was spitting everywhere. After a visit from our friends at NRMA (breakdown company) we were soon back on the road again with a new radiator cap as on the old one the seal had perished. This delayed us by about an hour so we were a little short on time for what we had planned in the afternoon. We managed to have a mooch around some of the viewpoints with stunning sights over the Blue Mountains national park. We stopped at Wentworth Falls which were pretty and had a well deserved ice cream, then at Echo falls which had an amazing panoramic view of the mountains and clear view of the Three Sisters rock formation too. We decided to stay put and finish seeing the national park on Thursday so we found a campsite, where we met some fellow spaceship travellers which was nice! We spent the evening doing laundry and sorting out dinner.
On Thursday We moved over the road from where we were staying to Katoomba falls where we took a walk down one of the paths to view the falls. Afterwards we went to Scenic Way, where the worlds steepest railway drops down to the valley floor. There's also a glass-bottomed cable car from one mountainside to the other, aargh! We decided to make a move as we had many miles to cover. First stop was Campbelltown to stock up on some supplies Next we stopped at Cateract Dam which was quite old and an engineering landmark of it's day. The reservoir was huge and the water being discharged through pipes was spectacular! After that we stopped at Mount Kiera which had a pretty view of the town of Wollongong. After that we drove for quite a while following the coast and visited various coastal lookouts. As it got towards evening we looked for a campsite around Dullas National park but were unable to get to any due to not being allowed to drive on unsealed (common gravel) roads. We were just heading back to the highway when we came across a load of Kangaroos and Wallabies at the side of the road. We stopped to have a look and took a few pics then headed on. We finally found a free roadside campsite near the town of Moruya which was adequate but quite creepy, Hol didn't get much sleep as she was convinced that there was an axe-murderer waiting in the bushes for us... cheese before bed is never a good move!!
On Friday we hit the road for Victoria early in the morning, We stopped for lunch at a pretty little beach then carried on driving. We stopped again at 'mystery bay' which proved an interesting history lesson. It was a long drive and we passed through many pretty little seaside towns and through huge forests before we reached the border...
See you there!
Love
Hol and Pete
